Presidents Cup awarded virtually at AGM

Published: 22 Jul 2021

Over the past two years hockey has seen a significant impact due to the Covid pandemic, however, Norfolk Hockey has still managed to run the vast majority of its Development and Academy sessions, though sometimes this has meant re-arrangements. Hockey camps are run through the Easter and Summer holidays and are very well attended to the extent that many sessions are completely full. Organising these sessions is no small task and whilst Mary Cheeseman looks after the coaching side, the backroom work is undertaken by our Player Pathway Administrator who deals with the player registration and payment along with answering the many queries that arise.

As well as being our Player Pathway Administrator he is also our webmaster and maintains the Norfolk Hockey website which many of the hockey fraternity use as their first port of call for anything Norfolk Hockey related especially in relation to Norfolk Junior Hockey with links to other pertinent sites.

In addition he has set up a Norfolk Hockey presence on social media which he maintains with lots of useful and fun information.

He also represents Norfolk on the East Competitions Committee and at East Region Hockey Association Board meetings.

As you can see he is quite busy making a significant contribution to hockey within Norfolk, so it is with great pleasure that this year I "virtually" present the Presidents Cup to Glenn Moore.

Within the update document you will see England Hockey have included brief role descriptions or links to the bigger Role Descriptions ahead of recruitment to the new Areas.

If you have already expressed an interest in a specific role please don't feel like you need to complete the form as we have this noted otherwise this is the opportunity to register an interest in any of the roles.
Post 31st March deadline we will look to share the applicants for roles with the Transition groups to then begin next steps towards the inaugural meetings of the new Areas at and after which the new committees can be appointed. Obviously in Areas transitioning from existing bodies we expect more continuity.

End of an Era as Norfolk Womans League draws to a close

Published: 2 Mar 2021

The following letter has this evening been circulated to Norfolk clubs;
NHA League Management Committee
Sponsored by Empresa
Important Information from the League Management Committee
Present Situation:
1. It would appear that the Government will be opening up the opportunity to play hockey again from the 29th March 2021.
2. However, the Committee understands that the directive from EH is that all league fixtures will stop from that date.
3. Because of this, the Committee would like you to know that all Norfolk Ladies Leagues and the Junior Development Leagues will conform to this directive and as from the 29th March 2021, the leagues will end.

What Does This Mean?
1. The Leagues have not been completed and matches cannot be played to complete them. Because of this and in the interest of "fair play", the Committee has agreed that all Leagues are null and void for the season 2020/2021.
2. The composition of the Leagues will revert to September 2020 as there will be NO promotion and NO relegations this season.
3. The composition of the Leagues as of September 2020 will be the composition of the Leagues handed on to the East League who will organise your fixture list and inform you of what your Club needs to do from now on.
4. The future of the Junior Development League is yet to be decided by EH.

So, What Happens About the Norfolk Ladies Leagues?
1. There will be no AGM as there is no need to elect officials and review rules.
2. The accounts will be presented as part of the NHA end of year accounts.
3. There will be no presentation evening for Winners as we have no winners.
Those Clubs who hold trophies, please will you keep them until we know better the way forward.

The Good News
1. The advice from EH to all Clubs is that as from 29th March 2021 you will be permitted to play friendly games.
2. However, you will still need to have an effective and up to date Covid-19 Risk Assessment in place.
3. You will need to ensure that your Covid-19 rules are shared with the visiting team(s) and are up-held throughout the fixture by both teams, the officials, and the spectators.

From the Committee:
1. You will be pleased to know that Avril, Ruth & Glenn have volunteered to be part of the East league and I am sure will be looking out for Norfolk.
2. May I thank ALL past and present Committee Members who have given their time to make hockey work for you.
3. Thank you also to all Clubs and individuals who have helped and supported the Committee over the years.
4. Our best wishes to Clubs, officials and players for success in hockey's new world.

Chris Williamson, League Administrator.

Norfolk Hockey Leagues Frozen

Published: 16 Mar 2020

Important Information and Advice from the Norfolk Hockey Association to All Norfolk League Teams
It is with much regret that the NHA has taken the decision to stop all leagues with immediate effect.
The senior leagues will be frozen as they stand today, and this will be the final result for 2019/2020.
The Junior Development final sections will be frozen until it is safe to continue the competition at a future date or the competition will be abandoned altogether if the situation does not improve by the beginning of May 2020.
There are two reasons: -
1. We have received news from a Club that a player who was involved in a league game played last Saturday has been told to self-isolate. Today we have another player who has been sent home from work to self-isolate.
2. We are mindful that the Government is recommending: -
a) "to avoid social contact and non-essential travel".
b) "to avoid pubs, clubs and restaurants".
c) "to avoid non-essential contact."
We need to accept that the virus is amongst us and for the Management Committee to expect teams to turn up and play league matches is irresponsible and is needlessly placing players and officials at unnecessary risk. For those who say that it is only two teams who are affected, we must ask, how many is it before we consider it to be a real risk? It is very important that we observe the need for "social distance" and we believe that if we are erring, then it is on the side of caution.
Please do not try to play these last league games as friendly fixtures. As a Club, please seriously consider whether you should continue with training, Committee meetings and social events. If you are organising other tournaments or competitions, please consider if they should go ahead.
The Executive Committee has the best interest of all players, officials and spectators at the heart of this decision. We wish you all well and look forward to resuming league fixtures in September 2020.

Thank you all for your help in the matter,
With best wishes,
Mary Cheeseman, NHA Chair
Avril Mallett, NHA Hon. Secretary
Chris Williamson, League Management Administrator
Katy Harris, Welfare Officer

EHB - AGM RESOLUTION PROPOSAL 2019

Published: 10 Aug 2019

EHB - AGM RESOLUTION PROPOSAL 2019

Following a resolution that was passed almost 2 1/2 years ago England Hockey were required to review the way hockey was structured in England. This was to be the first review in a very long time. The ideas and proposals have developed since that resolution and were recently unveiled to the members at a series of road shows. As a county, we are unsure how well they were attended but the East have informed counties that the majority of those present gave a show of hands in favour of the proposal.
For the members that could not make the road shows, the final draft of the AGM Resolution Proposal 2019 can be found using the following link under the July 2019 time frame.....

There will be a lot of change in some areas and lots of work will need to be done if the proposal is passed at the next EHB AGM in March 2020.

As a County it is important that the views of our clubs are expressed, so as a player or administrator of hockey in Norfolk, please take the time to read the document as it will effect our sport. Once you have read the resolution proposal there is an online survey that can be completed so that members can have their input. The closing date for this is 27th Oct. '19.

Communication and Continuing to support and grow our sport - NHA

Published: 5 Sep 2018

After a glorious Summer, topped by a hugely successfully organised Women's World Championship the season proper is now upon us. Work has been ongoing at NHA. Andrea Glover and her team of coaches ran a very successful coaching programme in the Norfolk phase of the EH Player Pathway for our young players, Chris Williamson has been leading a review of our Constitution and Avril Mallett has been working closely with Empresa to implement changes necessitated by GDPR. We have also been getting our heads around the new EH schools and clubs competition format and the effects of the new Pro League starting next season.

NHA wants all of its members to be informed, to participate effectively in the running of our continually growing sport. We know that attending meetings can be difficult - the numbers attending meetings reflect this. To that end, we have reduced the number of meetings you need to attend this season. There is still the opportunity for regular face-to-face communication but the use of our website and electronic communication is now of paramount importance. We do not want anyone to miss out on opportunities to participate or develop as a player, coach or official, as an individual or group.

All communications are sent via email by the NHA Secretary, Avril Mallett, to two people within your organisation: your named Primary Contact and your Secretary. It is then their responsibility to disseminate the information among club/school members. Contact details for these two officials should now be with Avril and you need to make us aware of changes. We would ask that you also acknowledge receipt of information so Avril knows that it has got through; this would help us enormously.

We, in turn, welcome communication and Glenn Moore, NHA Webmaster, is more than happy to advertise your events and achievements on the county website. If you see any of the committee around at your club/school, please come and talk to us; we are here to support you. I wish you all an enjoyable and competitive season and look forward to seeing Norfolk build on its successes from last season.

Having already qualified in the preliminary rounds the O40s Norfolk Men were drawn against Essex in the semi-final at the East Masters Regional County Competition at Lee Valley. Their winning score of 3-0 (Scorers: Matthew Brine, Nick Hooper, James Nash) took them into the final against Cambridgeshire who had made it through their semi-final round earlier in the day.
Although Norfolk had the lead over Cambridgeshire for the majority of the final, with goals from Norfolk's Rupert Snelling and Dave Francis, Cambridgeshire squeezed in an equaliser in the last moments of the match to take it to exciting penalty strokes with Norfolk just missing out losing 6-5 in a sudden death shoot out.
The squad consisted of players from Norwich City, Dereham, Harleston Magpies, Norwich Dragons, Pelicans and North Norfolk.

Norfolk Mens O50s - Reach National Semi Finals

Norfolk Mens O50's travelled to Peterborough to compete in the Preliminary Round of the East Tournament competing against Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. Norfolk faced Cambridgeshire in the opening match and with both defences on top chances were few and far between, the match ending in a 0-0 draw. Cambridgeshire then face Lincolnshire, the latter coming out on top with a 1-0 victory. Norfolk knew that in the last match that a draw would see them qualify for the Semi-Finals next Sunday at the Olympic Park. The first half saw Norfolk keep Lincolnshire at bay without creating any clear cut chances of their own. Midway through the second half skipper Ali Wardale intercepted a Lincolnshire pass out of defence and burst forward before releasing a pass to Jon Kidner who had found space behinds the Lincs defence. Kidner advanced into the Lincs circle slotting the ball past the keeper which gave them a 1-0 victory to top the group and qualify for the semi finals.
Squad: Lee Dowers, Collin Picton, Charlie Lankfer ( all Pelicans); Steve Marsh (Dereham); John Skittrall (Norfolk Nomad); Eric Davy, Jerry Herod (all Magpies); Ali Wardale, Geoff Spencer, John Ingham, Jon Kidner (all Norwich City); Rich Powley (Broadland)

Norfolk Hockey Player Pathway Administrator vacancy

A recent letter sent to Norfolk Hockey clubs;
Dear Coach/Captain/ President/hockey leader,
It is with some regret I have to advise you that Mary Cheeseman has decided to step down from her role as County Player Pathway Administrator. (Single System Administrator). Mary has been the backbone of junior hockey development in Norfolk for the past 6 years. Literally hundreds of young people have benefited from Mary's coaching expertise and her absolute devotion to the development of young hockey players across the county. Mary will be missed from this role and a replacement for her will be very difficult to find. I will not hide from anyone the effort and commitment required to do this job.

However, we now need to find a replacement. A link to a brief job description which outlines the role and will give prospective applicants an idea of what is required can be found by clicking the development tab on the main menu. Applicants are likely to have a coaching qualification of Level 2 or level 3. If you are interested in this role, please contact Avril as stated below or you may contact Mary directly if you wish to discuss the role.

I would like to emphasise that a replacement for Mary is essential. What has been achieved in Norfolk junior hockey over the last few years is remarkable and it must continue.

So, please make sure that this letter gets through to the right people (a copy of this letter can be found on the Development tab of the main menu) Please offer the right kind of encouragement and support in this endeavour to fill the role described in the attached document.

Ladies East Over 40's Regional Masters Tournament - Norfolk Bring home the Silverware

Ladies East Over 40's Regional Masters Tournament - Norfolk Bring home the Silverware

Norfolk Ladies Over 40's arrived at a sunny Culford School to compete in the Ladies East Over 40's Regional Masters Tournament against squads from Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Norfolk fielded a squad made up of players from both Norwich City HC and Norwich Dragons HC, Captained by Debbie Painter. The first game saw Norfolk have all the pressure against Essex, however they failed to convert a number of chances. Eventually the breakthrough came with Hannah Hardy pulling the ball back to Marie James to fire home to seal a 1-0 win.

Next up was the game against Cambridgeshire, who fielded a number of strong National Masters players. Cambridgeshire moved the ball around well and had the lions-share of possession and chances, but the Norfolk defence held firm and on the break, Marie James burst into the D, beating two or three defenders before slotting home (with Sally Rose on hand at the far post).

The final game was the decider against a Suffolk team who had scored freely against Essex. Norfolk knew a draw would seal the silverware, however went out looking to secure the win. The Norfolk defence of Karen Dagless, Jenny Brine, Ally Windsor-Waite, Angela Murgatoyd and Maz Doble needed to be at their best, with Suffolk making the running, however some great teamwork saw Norfolk soak up the pressure and earn themselves a hard fought draw, meaning the silverware was heading back up the A11 to Norfolk.

Considering this team had never played together on the same pitch, this was an excellent team effort and played in great spirit.

The Norfolk Squad consisted of Debbie Painter (Capt), Maz Doble (GK), Caroline Illing, Karen Dagless, Jenny Brine, Alex Woods, Sally Rose, Marie James, Gail Thomas, Ally Windsor-Waite, Angela Murgatroyd and Hannah Hardy.

Arrangements for Suspended Players

Published: 18 Nov 2015

NHUA are advising clubs and hockey venues that they provide at least a couple of seats or benches opposite the half-way line, between the team's benches/dug-out. From here it will be easier to manage any suspensions, given we now have a 2 minute suspension on a green card. Try not to send players into a neutral corner unless there is no alternative. Most clubs should be able to find a couple of plastic garden type chairs for this.
